Supporting Moms and Young Children

Recognizing a need to help support pregnant teens and teen moms with their educational goals, MLC began partnering with Head Start in March 2010 to form our Early Headstart program (EHS).  Merit’s EHS program seeks to foster both academic achievement and life skills for the moms, and health and development with the children.  Merit EHS students have had good success, and most graduate with some pursuing a college education, or complete their GED/TASC requirements.

Eligibility requirements include: student must be 19 or younger, attending school or be employed, and meet the standard MLC attendance requirements.  Merit provides services for 24 infants, from newborns to the age of 3.  The schedule for EHS students is 9 am to 3 pm, which includes classroom time, meals and activities with the children, and other instruction.  Merit provides three separate classrooms, each staffed with two certified teachers and a maximum of 8 children.
