Welcome
Welcome to Merit Learning Center
Merit Learning Center (MLC) is an alternative school that serves five out of the seven public school corporations in Elkhart County for students in grades 10 through 12. Our mission is to provide a place and means where students can successfully complete their academic studies. MLC serves students who have withdrawn or intend to withdraw from school; are parents or expectant parents; are employed during the school day; or those who have not complied academically because of one of the three previous causes. Students can attend MLC in a variety of formats: full-time, dual enrollment or for credit recovery. In each case, students can complete their high school educations, earn a diploma, and enhance job-advancement.
Meeting Student Needs
MLC operates three sessions during the school day in an attempt to meet the needs of students that are unable to function in the traditional school setting. Our setting is a small, structured, nurturing atmosphere. There is flexible scheduling, and learning is mastery-based as well as self-paced. The course curriculum is a mixture of on-line and offline components. Apex Learning is used to deliver much of the on-line curriculum while the off-line curriculum is a mixture of traditional lessons, independent projects, laboratory investigations and problem-based learning activities.
Service Learning
In January 2008, MLC incorporated service learning opportunities into the curriculum. MLC staff feels that service learning will not only help to increase the attendance rate and average number of credits earned per student but also give our students an understanding of "mutual investment" via service learning. "Mutual investment" refers to the idea that the government alone cannot invest enough resources to meets the needs of all citizens. The concept implies the need for citizen responsibility and participation. Service learning has a natural flow with the MLC‘s intention of improving academic performance while increasing the development of positive character in our youth.
